Description

Thalidomide can be compared with the Phoenix that rose from the ashes according to Greek Mythology. A drug that was banned 50 years ago after the infamous ‘thalidomide babies’ case, emerged  as a very effective option many years later for Multiple Myeloma, a haematological malignancy. However, female patients should not be pregnant when the drug is started and effective birth control measures should be practiced during treatment with thalidomide.

Indications:

• In combination with dexamethasone is indicated for the treatment of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma
• For the acute treatment of the cutaneous manifestations of moderate to severe erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL)
• As monotherapy for such ENL treatment in the presence of moderate to severe neuritis
• As maintenance therapy for prevention and suppression of the cutaneous manifestations of ENL recurrence
